This professional issues statement is an official policy statement of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is a companion document to the position statement on the Roles and Responsibilities of Speech-Language Pathologists in Schools . It was developed by the Ad Hoc Committee on the Roles and Responsibilities of the School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist. Members of the Ad Hoc Committee were Barbara Ehren (chair), Frances Block, Catherine Crowley, Ellen Estomin, Sue Ann Goldman, and Susan Karr (ex officio). Vice President for Professional Practices in Speech-Language Pathology Brian Shulman (2006–2008) and Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology Practice Julie Noel (2009–2011) served as the ASHA monitoring vice presidents, with contributions from ASHA staff member Deborah Adamczyk. From the time I was 3 years old to the time I was 9 years old, we lived in Canada. While living there, I was simultaneously learning English, French, and Japanese. At home, I spoke only Japanese, so it was difficult learning contrasting languages at school. However, these years were formative in that I discovered my innate drive to learn. Powering through this rigorous early education helped give me the confidence that I’d later lean on in college.

When I first began working in the schools I was surprised by all of the other responsibilities that were expected of me working in this setting. Staff meetings, duties, curriculum…rather than continue resisting it I began to embrace it.

On any given school day, a student is participating at school more than he is at home (waking hours of course). It is their real world, their job, their social life, and their future. The biggest impact you can make is to become knowledgeable about that world, and integrate into it so your voice and skills can be used to their greatest potential for the benefit of the students on your caseload.

So then I began working with students and was surprised by all of the other responsibilities that were expected of me working in this setting. I went to staff meetings, but I felt frustrated that everything seemed to center around standards, curriculum, and lesson plans. I tended to tune out when they addressed professional learning communities or the new math curriculum. I wasn’t sure why I was asked to participate in the administration of district testing or serve on committees and duties. Although, I tried to be a team player I was resistant to anything that I considered outside of my job description.

Intelligibility, refers to how well people can understand your child’s speech. If a child’s articulation skills are compromised for any reason, his intelligibility will be decreased in compared to other children his age. SLP’s can work with your child to teach them how to produce the specific speech sounds or sound patterns that he is having difficulty with, and thus increasing his overall speech intelligibility. Bilingual Track (STEPS)

The STEPS program stands for Speech Therapy Education, Practicum, and Services for Latino Children and Families.

The number of Spanish speakers has increased throughout the nation, and this upward trend is expected to continue. According to ASHAs (2015) national survey, only 6% of ASHA-certified clinicians speak a language other than English with enough fluency to provide services in that language; the percentage is 4% for Spanish.

The 2014 U. S. Census reports that Latinos are the fastest growing minority population. In addition, more than one third of Latinos are under 18 years of age, while one quarter of other group populations are within that age range. The United States Department of Education (2015) reports that most of the increases in minority enrollment are due to a concomitant increase in the Latino population; in fact, one in four children in schools is Latino/a, and 80% of English Language Learners (ELL) are Latino.
