SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco fire crews responded Tuesday morning to the scene of a truck that went into a hotel.
Two people went to the hospital — including the truck driver and a hotel guest. They are expected to recover.
Police say the crash happened in the area of Broderick and Lombard streets at around 6:30 a.m.
Videos posted by SFFD on social media show the bed of the truck sticking out of the side of the building.
According to police, the truck driver was speeding down Lombard Street when he cut through a gas station narrowly missing a gas pump and a customer. The driver hit two parked cars. The truck flipped around and plowed into the side of La Luna Hotel on Lombard Street. Half of the truck ended up inside a hotel room where a guest was staying.
The Department of Building Inspection was on scene to assess the damage.
Several hotel guests, nearby residents, and employees at the gas station witnessed the wild crash.
“This morning, the whole building shook. At first, I thought it was an earthquake,” said Gabbi Redding who was staying at the hotel.
She and other guests went outside and were astounded at what they saw.
“The whole truck was backwards in the side of the building, lodged into the side of the building,” said Redding. “It looked like a scene from a Disney action-adventure movie. It was a lot.”
“Clearly, this car was out of control, humungous car, smacked straight into the side of the building,” said Ali Sutton who lives on a few doors away and heard the crash.
Surveillance cameras captured images of the speeding truck as it zipped through the gas station.
Employee Moises Yoc started his shift just 10 minutes before the crash happened.
“It happened very fast. And then, we saw something passing here very fast. Then, we heard the noise. It was like a bomb and we ran outside to see what happened,” said Yoc.
Yoc says the truck driver got out with help from several people.
“They opened the door and they pulled the guy out from the car,” said Yoc. “When they opened the car door, he was walking fine.”
The crash happened in Supervisor Stephen Sherrill’s district.
“Public safety is traffic safety,” said Sherrill. “The investigation is still ongoing. It sounds like there’s extenuating circumstance, possibly a medical situation involved in this crash.”
Police say “a medical emergency may have occurred during the collisions.”
Before the crash, police say the truck driver hit another driver at Richardson and Francisco. That driver was not hurt, according to police.
Anyone with information about the crashes should call SFPD.
