SAN BRUNO, Calif. — If you’re looking for meat and dairy, you won’t find it here. Hangry Planet in San Bruno does not look like your typical gas station or convenience store at first glance. Normal gas pumps are visible yet decorated and the sculptures looming over the establishment are curious. This adds to the surprise inside.
“This is Hangry Planet, North America’s first and only plant-based convenience store. It’s a process because people come in and for a while they were pretty irritated. Over time its sort of evolved into delightful confusion,” gleamed Bobak Bakhtiari, owner of Hangry Planet.
Between the bright signs of cows and pigs living free harmonious lives, are the products that are carefully curated to be tasty yet healthier for the community at large.
“We look at four things, Yumminess, nutritional profile, additives, and then environmental impact. I like to think that we are trying to inspire curiosity here. Gently nudge. Although the loud colorful signs are a different type of fascist gentleness,” said Bakhtiari.

Filling up your tank is still fundamental at Hangry Planet but there are other options that seem normal until you look and listen a little closer. For example, the VR car wash?
“It’s a pretty multifaceted land of wonder, nutrition and plant-based advocacy. I always wanted to take this traditionally mundane space and kind of give it some awe and wonder… Now I wanted to target that childhood wonder of a carwash. What if we put six projectors in there and piped in some audio with an FM modulator for some audio, and that’s where VR car wash came in,” added Bakhtiari.
Hangry Planet also partnered with Vegan Mob food truck in the parking lot to offer another option for the plant-based crowd.
