SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco fire crews are working to contain a three-alarm fire at a residential building in the Marina District Wednesday morning.
SFFD says two firefighters have been injured. Chief Dean Crispen says 145 firefighters responded to the fire at a three-story building that was under construction in the area of Chestnut and Broderick Streets.
Both of the firefighters injured fell through the floor, one of them falling from the third floor to the second floor. They were both taken to the hospital and are said to be stable.
Chief Crispen says when units arrived they saw heavy fire coming from the second floor, which they were able to extinguish, but it extended to the third floor and the building to the left.
Crews had to open the ceiling and cut a hole in the roof to allow smoke to escape.
They say the fire is still being fought inside the building.
Chief Crispen says the building being under construction may have contributed to the fire spreading, but it is not currently known how it started.
Buildings on both sides were evacuated and officials are working on relocating impacted residents.
