ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — FBI Director James Comey said he’s not afraid after his two-count indictment by a federal grand jury, saying he and his family have “known for years that there are costs for standing up to Donald Trump.”
Now, federal authorities have set their sights on other perceived enemies of the president, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff, a longtime political foe of Trump.
Eyewitness News spoke exclusively with Schiff on Thursday in Anaheim, and when asked if he was worried that he’ll be Trump’s next target, he said he knows he’s “certainly on the president’s enemy list.”
“Make no mistake about that,” Schiff told ABC7. “What I think the American people need to be concerned about is that it is a long and growing list, and one day, they may find themselves on it. He’s going after people who contribute to the Democratic party. He’s going after people who held him accountable during his first administration.”
Comey, who said he’s ready for a trial, is being prosecuted by a lawyer that’s been hand-picked by Trump. Schiff told ABC7 that indicting Comey protects people who are actually committing crimes.
A longtime member of the U.S. House, Schiff became one of Trump’s chief congressional critics when he helped lead the first impeachment trial in 2020 and served as a prominent voice on the committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, mob attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“To have a president abuse power that way, so corruptly use the Justice Department, is really unprecedented,” said Schiff. “I served almost six years with the Justice Department. I served under Democratic presidents and I served under Republican presidents. I never felt any political pressure of any kind from either direction. It was just unheard of. I think it’s notable that the career prosecutors, that people of integrity, are quitting or being fired like the U.S. attorney of Virginia, and sadly, they’re being replaced by people of no experience and who are willing to do the president’s bidding.”
Comey was indicted on charges of making a false statement and obstruction related to his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020.
The indictment came just days after Trump issued public demand for his Justice Department to act “now” to bring prosecutions against Comey and other political foes.
Schiff said he’s afraid that the indictment, which he called a “political prosecution,” will discourage others from doing their jobs. He said the only way to stand up to something like that is to be courageous.
Meantime, following the indictment, Comey’s son-in-law Troy Edwards Jr. resigned his post as a national security prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, according to an email obtained by ABC News.
“To uphold my oath to the Constitution and country, I hereby resign as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in the Department of Justice effective immediately,” Edwards wrote.
