SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco’s newest public park is being celebrated by locals and visitors alike. Cityside Park, located on Treasure Island, was officially dedicated Saturday. It features some spectacular views of the city.
“I think it’s going to bring more people together, make it more alive for the island,” said Breasia Rucker.
Rucker and neighbor Mary Taufaao were loving the scenery from Cityside Park on the western shores of Treasure Island with a sweeping view of San Francisco.
“The scenery, it’s good for the kids, walking the dog,” Taufaao said.
The city’s newest public park cost $12 million to build, offering Bayfront green space on six acres.

“Today, we’re opening a park which captures the spirit of San Francisco,” said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.
Lurie said Cityside Park will be the first stop for visitors arriving to T.I. by ferry, the latest move by the mayor to improve public spaces and drive the city’s recovery.
“If you turn your cameras around and look at this view, it’s astounding. It’s a place the community can come to but also the region and the rest of the country has a new park to visit when they come to San Francisco,” Lurie said.
The park is a focal point of a new neighborhood under redevelopment on T.I. Its developer says plans include about 8,000 new market rate and affordable homes for 18,000 residents, with shops and restaurants.
“This is the biggest new neighborhood that’s been created in San Francisco, we want to have that neighborhood be for a wide range of household types and a wide range of incomes,” said project developer Chris Meany.

Treasure Island has seen lots of extreme makeovers through the years. It was built in 1939 for the Golden Gate International Exposition, later a military Navy Base and decades later, the first residents would call it home.
“There wasn’t anything here on Treasure Island but dirt,” said Melanie Williams.
Williams moved here in 1996 and has seen lots of changes. She believes this new community space is a positive step forward.
“This is a miracle to be by the Bay and the community coming together. Thank you so much,” Williams said.
