SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — From the mariachi bands, to the masks, to the dancing and food, it was a Day of the Dead celebration in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.
“An event like this Día De Los Muertos, it’s an honor because it’s creating a space for the representation of our culture, and you know, being a part of the community and always being part of the community,” said Jon Toledo, Founder of Hyphy Icee.
The immigrant community is on edge, but not shying away.
TARA CAMPBELL: “This is a very difficult time for this community with what’s been happening with ICE and with other federal agents. Would you speak just to what an event like this means?”
SUPERVISOR BILAL MAHMOOD: “We can’t lose our spirit in San Francisco. We have to celebrate joy. It’s one of the best ways to be pushed back and ensure that this is a commitment from the city that we have the backs of our residents.”
The city went bigger than ever this year with the Tenderloin Street Fair taking over multiple blocks; some showing off their dance moves, while local businesses were showing off their specialties.
“We’re here showing support for everyone. The community supports everyone. The city of San Francisco has all the ethnicities and all kinds of people, and there is a love between all communities,” said Adna Alameri, Owner of Fanoos Grills. “This is a Hispanic festival and we’re here enjoying it, and we are as happy as they are for this festival.”

With dozens of Hispanic families living in fear of detention and deportation, community leaders in Sonoma have canceled the usual Día de los Muertos celebrations.
Mayor Daniel Lurie was also among those joining in the festivities.
TARA CAMPBELL: “What do you think it means today to have this outpouring of celebration during this time that’s really quite difficult for this community?”
MAYOR LURIE: “I think we in San Francisco, we’ve gone through challenging times before. And what I loved about the last few weeks is that we came together, whether it was around our immigrant community, whether it was around SNAP benefits. This is a city that rises to the occasion.”
