PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A shocking story turned tragic mystery in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood is now the focus of a new Hulu docuseries.
Ellen Greenberg‘s death was ruled a suicide, but her parents have long questioned that conclusion. Now, they’re telling her story in a new light.

The three-part series, “Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg,” features never-before-seen interviews with family and friends, along with crime scene photos and autopsy analysis.
“The story carried itself to this point. There’s so many twists and turns, lies and falsehoods,” said Ellen’s father, Josh Greenberg.
Ellen, a 27-year-old Philadelphia school teacher, was found dead in her apartment in 2011 with more than 20 stab wounds. Her death was initially ruled a homicide, but later changed to suicide, a decision her parents have been fighting to overturn for years.
The series is directed by Nancy Schwartzman and includes narration from 6abc reporter Annie McCormick, who has followed the case since 2011.

“Annie makes a really interesting point that, at the beginning, this wasn’t really covered. Because you hear about it, and then it’s a suicide, and it goes away,” Schwartzman said. “News coverage and journalism were such a huge part of this story. The Greenbergs were not getting any movement or answers from all these institutions, the police, the medical examiners.”
Earlier this year, the former medical examiner said he now believes Ellen’s death should be “designated as something other than suicide.”

“I think he was telling the truth; it was about time,” said Josh Greenberg.
The case is now back in court to enforce a settlement reached between the City of Philadelphia and Ellen’s parents, in which the current medical examiner agreed to conduct an “expeditious” review of the death.
“By launching this docuseries, the world could see the steps, the heartbreak, but give you concrete evidence. You can make up your own mind, but I want you to get to know our daughter,” said Sandee Greenberg, Ellen’s mother.
“Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg” is streaming now on Hulu.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
