HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) — Three armed suspects who allegedly tried to rob a security guard in Oakland were injured after the car they were in crashed into another vehicle in Hayward while fleeing the scene of the crime, according to police.
The initial incident happened at a store near International Boulevard and Durant Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the armed suspect walked up to the armed security guard and demanded he drop his gun, but the guard refused and opened fire. None of the suspects were hit by that gunfire.
The suspects then fled the scene and were later located by an OPD motorcycle officer who attempted to pull over the vehicle. Authorities say the suspects did not stop and took off at a high-rate of speed.
Oakland police decided to not pursue the suspects’ car but instead track it from the air using OPD’s helicopter.
Police say the suspect vehicle then collided with another car at Hesperian and La Playa Drive around 4 p.m. They say the three suspects, one adult and two juveniles, were injured in that crash. Their injuries range from minor to critical.
SKY7 was over the scene, which showed a car wrapped around a light pole and another vehicle with some front-end damage farther down the street.
Oakland police claim they were not pursuing the suspects and were only tracking their location at the time of the crash.
