SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — This safe sleeping site in San Jose was opened to unhoused adults on Monday, and now it’s temporarily shut down come Friday.
SKY7 shows us a bird’s eye view of the tents at the Taylor Street Navigation Hub.
On Friday, officials with the city’s housing department said the RV that serves as an office space for case managers and other administrators lost power due to a generator issue.
Sarah Fields is with the deputy director over Public Affairs of the Housing Department.

“All of the clients at that site have been moved from that location to another location together to one of the other emergency interim housing sites the city contracts out,” Fields said.
City officials said this site is designed to serve as a temporary stop for unsheltered adults. It’s meant to be a stop for weeks or months.
Shaunn Cartwright, founder of Unhoused Response Group, has been a fierce critic of this kind of temporary housing model.
“Honestly, I thought it would take at least two weeks before it failed. I didn’t think it would be less than a whole week,” Cartwright said.

She feels the city rushed the process.
“Saying to people I want you to go live in our tent instead of your tent, is really like nonsensical to people,” Cartwright said.
The site has a total of 56 tents and offers meals and showers. But the Housing Department said, so far, less than a dozen people have moved in.
“Because, most people said ‘I don’t want to go live in the tent city. I know you have hotel rooms. I want to go live in a hotel,'” Cartwright said.

I asked Fields if the city has been struggling to enlist people at this site.
“I think it’s too early to say if there’s sort of a client preference. you know. We were really making those decisions about the priority list,” Fields said.
She went on to describe the demographic at Taylor Street Navigation Hub.
“The aim of the navigation hub is really to work with individual adults, potentially couples, but certainly no families, and there will be no minors at this site with children,” Fields said.
Fields said the city is working diligently to bring this site back online.
