SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Professional tennis is coming to San Francisco this weekend.
The Laver Cup’s iconic black court is now set up at Chase Center.
The event features Team Europe versus Team World, where six of the top men’s tennis players from Europe face off against six players from the rest of the world.
It was founded in part by tennis legend Roger Federer in 2017.
Some of the players include world number one Carlos Alcaraz, fresh off his U.S. Open victory, and top-ranked American Taylor Fritz.

The Laver Cup’s CEO, Steve Zacks, says there’s a lot about San Francisco that made him want to bring the tournament here.
“It was an attractive option because it’s such an exciting city for people to visit,” Zacks said. “We know it has a lot of tennis-loving fans. It’s great for the travel of the players to get to their next destination. This fantastic building, the great organization.”
To drum up excitement, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie challenged Federer to a friendly competition. The two hit some balls on the refurbished courts at McLaren Park.
The action kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday.
This will be the first time the Laver Cup will be held on the West Coast.
The Golden State Valkyries will relocate to SAP Center in San Jose for their home playoff game Wednesday against Minnesota because of the Laver Cup tennis event, which had been scheduled before San Francisco was granted a WNBA team.
