NEW YORK — A woman visiting New York from Jurupa Valley, California was changing her 10-month-old daughter in a seventh-floor restroom at a Macy’s on Thursday when a woman suddenly stabbed her from behind, according to police.
It happened at the department store in Herald Square just before 3 p.m.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the 38-year-old victim and her partner are both LASD employees. They were able to disarm the suspect and held her down until authorities arrived, according to ABC News.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where she’s listed in stable condition.
Meantime, the suspect, who’s been identified as 43-year-old Kerri Aherne of Massachusetts, has been charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
A Macy’s spokesperson released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place today as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority. We kindly defer any further questions to the local authorities.”
Police say the attack appeared to be unprovoked.
