SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — This weekend opens the door to some of the stormiest days of the year here in the Bay Area, yes, just in time for the holidays when people are likely traveling or out and about.
Enjoy the sunshine while you can because ABC7 News Meteorologist Drew Tuma says winter is coming – wintry weather that is.
“We’re tracking heavy rain and gusty winds not only here in the Bay Area, but across Northern California,” Tuma said.
TIMELINE: Week of storms to soak Bay Area, possibly bring a foot of rain in parts of North Bay
The storms will bring some significant snow to the Sierra – we’re not talking inches, we’ll be measuring in feet.
Ski resort consultant Kevin Cooper says many mountains are brown right now, but not for long.
“As we get into the 25th, the 26th, 7th and 8th when those forecast models are from 30 to 70 inches,” Cooper said. “That could change everything and reset the season into January, February, March and out into April.”
Tahoe is expecting a lot of visitors, but travel early.
Tuma says interstates and freeways may shut down due to heavy snow.
In fact, if you’re planning on heading anywhere in California, the chances of significant weather, including wind and flooding, may impact your travel across the entire state.

“Christmas Eve, it’s really focused across Northern California and the Central Coast,” Tuma said. “And then by Christmas Day, it’s setting its sights on Southern California. It’s really going to be tough Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to travel across much of California.”
“If you’re staying local, Christmas in the Park is one of the best places to get into the holiday spirit here in San Jose – in person or in your car,” said Christmas in the Park Managing Director Ted Lopez.
He says the cheer continues, rain or shine.
“We have some really great options for people,” Lopez said. “Our drive-thru Blinky’s drive-thru over at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, which is our largest fundraiser of the year. It’s a mile-long light show that we do, which is family-friendly and tied to lights. And then we have some new activations inside the park itself this year, like our Tavern. So, we’re ready for you, come out and see us.”
Whether it’s a white Christmas, or a wet one, the storms won’t wash away holiday fun here in the Bay Area.
