SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — We’re imagining the future of San Francisco from the skyline to the rail line.
On Friday, real estate company Prologis updated the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors on the San Francisco Railyards project. The project would increase Caltrain service, connect with future high-speed rail, and build housing and community spaces.
Ryan Ludwig knows how to get around. He’s lived in San Francisco since 2018 and uses Caltrain daily to commute to his job in San Mateo.
“I love taking Caltrain to work. It’s always fun to look at the highway and be like, ‘Hahaha sucks to be a commuter right now,” Ludwig said.

“I’ve always been fascinated with California high-speed rail,” Ludwig said.
So, he was well versed in the Railyards project, a transit-oriented development that would stitch together SoMa, Mission Bay and Showplace Square. The project covers a half mile of King Street from 4th Street to 7th Street, potentially bringing with it enhanced Caltrain services, housing, and community spaces, and a connection to future high-speed rail.
“I think it’s a great idea. A lot of other countries have high-speed rail; getting from here to LA in an eco-friendly manner is great,” Ludwig said.
The company at the helm, Prologis, updated the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors. Prologis says we’re likely more than three years out.
“Infrastructure projects, they take time,” Ludwig said.

Time and money, which would be needed for the rail infrastructure.
Lukas B. says bring it. He moved to SF from Europe.
“We could use a lot more restaurants, cafes, more life in SoMa,” said Lukas.
He says he loves San Francisco as a whole and everything the city has to offer, but thinks this area near his office could use some work.
As for the prospect of leaving work on a Friday, hopping on Caltrain, followed by high-speed rail for a weekend in LA?
“It’s so far out. It’s more a fantasy than a reality,” he said.
