SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — It has been 30 days since San Francisco Supervisors voted to restrict RV’s from parking in city streets for more than 2 hours. Which means the enforcement period is set to begin.
San Francisco’s crackdown on RV’s is getting closer.
“I have a very normal life. The only thing again is that I just don’t make enough to pay rent. If I were making enough to pay rent, I would never be here,” said Jean Pierre, RV resident.
Jean Pierre is one of hundreds of people living in RV’s that will need to move their vehicles to avoid getting towed. He has a job and has been on a waitlist for subsidized housing. He is concerned that this enforcement will push people to other cities.
“Go to Daly City? In 2 weeks, Daly City will say the same, homeless out of here. You go to Oakland and in a month, they say homeless out of here. So, this is the game,” said Jean Pierre.

The waiting period for the enforcement process to begin is officially over by the end of August. In a statement, the city’s department of Emergency Services said in part:
“Oversized vehicles can no longer be stored on city streets, and we are pairing that expectation with real pathways to safe, stable housing, followed by consistent enforcement.”
In May, the city identified 437 RVs with people living in them. That’s the group the city is promising to help find housing as it gets closer to officially restricted RVs across the city, but if they don’t get housing many are wondering where to go next.

Dates to remember
The city is planning to roll out the 2 hours parking enforcement in phases:
Monday, September 1 is when the first outreach will begin.
In October, the city will enroll a limited number of eligible RV residents in temporary permits for up to six months while they go through the housing process.
In November, the actual enforcement is set to begin.

The city is also offering to buy back some of these RV’s. San Francisco Coalition on Homelessness is urging the city to focus on increasing housing.
“The research shows we should be diversifying our homeless infrastructure. We should be investing in RV parks, that actually serve folks who don’t have the same acuity rates in homeless who may not be in the same intersections of drug use and mental health crisis that are actually more stable, but those don’t exist in our city,” said Luka Illa, SF Coalition on Homelessness.
