Get your sleuthing skills ready. Season five of “Only Murders in the Building” is here!
When we last saw Mabel, Charles and Oliver, played by Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short respectively, they’d just discovered the body of Lester, the longtime and beloved Arconia doorman. As season five begins, they are on the hunt for clues to solve the case.
“We go to the old-fashioned criminals, the mob, and we learn that there’s a different mob, there’s a new mob that has taken the place of the old mob, which is not effective as it once was at killing people,” Martin told On The Red Carpet.
Lester, as it’s revealed, has known our trio for years and there are lots of nostalgic moments through the season.
“It was nice to see, you know, the backstory a little bit of all our characters, really. I mean, seeing the younger versions and where they are, said Gomez. “In particular, Mabel has a really lovely relationship with our doorman, Lester. And you can really see how much that meant to her.”
“They are great scenes to play because they’re well written. If you’re an actor and you’re playing a well written scene, it’s just, your day is great,” added Short.
Also great about this season? Another who’s who of special guest stars, including Renee Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest, Tea Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Bobby Cannavale and many more. Michael Cyril Creighton, who plays Howard, said it was a pleasure to be on set with this galaxy of stars.
“I always say it’s an honor to be the least famous person on our show,” he joked. “They’re all playing such exciting, surprising, different characters than what I’m normally used to seeing them play, so it’s a blast.”
“It’s the dream job. I couldn’t be luckier, I couldn’t be happier. This surpasses my wildest dreams of where I would be,” Creighton continued. “I’m so happy every time I walk on that set. It’s the nicest job in showbiz.”
Gomez suggested that viewers and sleuthers should keep an eye out for the little details throughout the series to help them figure out whodunit.
“There’s (sic) these little nuggets that you don’t realize are woven into the story until much later so, I guess, it’s really about paying attention to the story,” she said.
“I mean right around episode six or seven, you start seeing the plot lines that have been set up earlier starting to come together, to mesh together and then finally in episode ten…it all comes together and set up another possible murder,” added Martin slyly.
“What are you saying? What are you saying? I know you just said something,” Short interjected, picking up on Martin’s hint of a new season.
“No, I didn’t say anything,” denied Martin.
While we wait for a new season announcement, you can watch season five of “Only Murders in the Building.” The first three episodes premiere September 9 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. New episodes will drop weekly.
