SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — Tuesday is unusual Election Day in Santa Clara County.
A special election for county assessor will have the Registrar of Voters counting ballots in the new year.
The assessor manages a team to assess all taxable property in Santa Clara County.
It’s a position Neysa Fligor is very familiar with, she’s the current assistant assessor in the county.
She believes her experience will lead to a seamless transition of power for the benefit of residents.
“Our role is one step in the process of generating revenue that funds vital services in Santa Clara County,” Fligor said. “I am the only candidate with the experience, qualifications, leadership and management skills to be the next county assessor. I am ready to serve the residents of Santa Clara County on day one.”
Rishi Kumar doesn’t have direct experience in the office, but holds years of experience in tech and city council.
He believes his perspectives can lead to property tax reform locally – especially for seniors.
“We believe the management skills that we have managing hundreds of people in high-tech role will be absolutely important in the role of the Assessor’s Office,” Kumar said. “I’m the only candidate talking about affordability. In Santa Clara County, there are seniors who are being pushed to homelessness due to property taxes. And that’s the change that I’m looking to bring.”
If it seems like an odd time for a special election – it is.
Registrar of Voters Matt Moreles says there are strict rules in the county charter of when an election takes place after a vacancy to the assessor role and when a run-off must occur if needed.
He’s expecting around a 20% overall turnout – only 16% of registered voters have voted as of Monday.
“Obviously, that’s challenging due to the timing around the holidays,” Moreles said. But we’re hoping that as voters are getting back from their holiday plans, they still have enough time to get their ballot in and make their voice heard.”
If you haven’t cast your ballot, there’s still time to do so.
Drop boxes and voting centers will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
