ALAMEDA, Calif. (KGO) — A water main break in Alameda that flooded streets and caused sinkholes is under control.
The water main broke around 6 p.m. Sunday night, sending most likely thousands of gallons of water flooding down Webster Street at Buena Vista. The road was closed all night.
Crews were able to identify the source of the water main break and stop the water from flooding, but not before there was substantial flooding in a three-block area.
They were able to turn the water off by around 11 p.m. after finding a 12-inch cast iron leak in an 85-year-old piece of infrastructure.
At one point several businesses said they lost their water and others said they were running low on water.
East Bay Municipal Utility District said they had been in touch with local businesses that had been impacted.
“And there’s also a nursing home in this area, so we are in close contact with them to make sure that they stay safe, that they have what they need for the nursing home, for example, we’re going to bring them water,” EBMUD spokesperson Andrea Pook said.
Both the Alameda Fire and Police Department had been helping EBMUD in the area
